S. Korea blows big lead to settle for silver in men's epee fencing team event

South Korea's men's epee fencing team event at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games concluded with a silver medal, as they failed to capitalize on an early lead. The team, composed of Park Sang-young, Jang Hyo-min, Nam Yeon-ho, and Kwon O-min, narrowly lost to Kazakhstan's Kirill Prokhodov, Ruslan Kurbanov, Vadim Sharlaimov, and Yerlik Sertay by a score of 43-42.

Despite Park, Jang, and Nam not achieving medal-winning performances in individual events, their combined efforts contributed to South Korea's 12th consecutive men's epee team medal in this competition. Fencing teams engage in nine head-to-head matches, each lasting three minutes and concluding when one team reaches a score that is a multiple of five.

The event ends when a team attains 45 points or surpasses the opponent's score at the end of the ninth bout. Park and Prokhodov were tied at three points each after the first bout, but Jang's victory over Kurbanov in the subsequent bout established a 6-4 South Korean lead. Nam further widened the margin with a win against Sharlaimov, leading to a 12-9 advantage.

However, Park's failure to maintain this momentum ultimately resulted in South Korea settling for silver.
