Polish PM Donald Tusk likely to visit India next month; focus on bolstering economic, political, strategic ties

Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk is set to visit India from October 21 to 24, according to sources cited by The Indian Express. Tusk, who has been Poland's Prime Minister since 2023 and previously held the position from 2007 to 2014, last visited India in September 2010 during Dr. Manmohan Singh's tenure. With Poland emerging as a significant economy in Europe and at the heart of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Tusk's visit aims to strengthen economic, political, and strategic ties between the two nations.

Tusk has been a prominent advocate for the India-European Union trade deal, which is expected to be finalized by December when Prime Minister Narendra Modi visits Brussels. In preparation for Tusk's Indian trip, logistical arrangements are being made for visits to Delhi and Bangalore.

This will be a reciprocal visit, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid a state visit to Poland in August 2024 to mark the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Poland. The summit resulted in elevating the India-Poland bilateral relationship to a Strategic Partnership.

In recent years, India and Poland have enhanced cooperation in defense and space sectors. Officials from both countries are working towards signing agreements in these areas during Tusk's visit. They are also focusing on developing port infrastructure, shipbuilding, and marine technology, which have dual applications in both military and civilian contexts.

Poland's Deputy Foreign Minister, Władysław Teofil Bartoszewski, stated that both nations are moving beyond strategic statements and seeking concrete cooperation in defense and supply-chain resilience. A group from India's Ministry of Defence is reportedly scheduled to visit Warsaw in the coming weeks for a working group meeting with their Polish counterparts.

India and Poland share a long-standing friendly relationship, forged by their opposition to colonialism, imperialism, and racism. The diplomatic ties were established in 1954, with the opening of the Indian embassy in Warsaw in 1957. Both countries have had regular high-level visits since then, with Poland becoming India's key economic partner in Central Europe after joining the EU in 2004.
