Pedro Sánchez confirma que el Gobierno trabaja en un decreto sobre vivienda

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has confirmed that the government is working on a decree concerning housing, aiming to alleviate the housing emergency faced by millions of Spaniards. Sánchez stated that the executive branch is working against the clock to present the decree, known as the Maricarmen decree, at the Council of Ministers on Tuesday.

He called upon his political partners to make a final effort to approve the decree. Maricarmen, a 87-year-old woman, recently made a video urging the Spanish government, particularly Sánchez, to bring the decree to the floor of the Congress, stating that it is not an ideological issue, but a matter of humanity. The protest in Madrid on Saturday, which followed the eviction of Maricarmen, demanded that the government approve the decree on Tuesday and include indefinite rental contracts to prevent any more Maricarmens.

The government had attempted to pass the decree in July, but failed due to a lack of support, according to Minister Mónica García. The Socialists accuse the previous government of dragging its feet and the People's Party of being as greedy as the funds. If the Socialists had supported the decree in the previous months, it would not have been necessary to hold the protest in Madrid.

Once the Council of Ministers approves the decree, it will be sent to the Congress, where JuntsxCat, whose general secretary Jordi Turull expressed support for the decree if it aims to prevent funds from being hoarded, is expected to vote in favor.
