Oklahoma news: Sooners fans call for John Mateer benching after Georgia blowout

Oklahoma Sooners football fans are demanding the benching of quarterback John Mateer following their 41-13 loss to No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday. The game marked Mateer's fifth season with the Sooners, and his second as their starting quarterback. After a stellar debut season at Washington State in 2024, the 2025 campaign did not go as planned.

Georgia's defense proved to be too much for Mateer, who completed only 25 of his 34 passes for 231 yards and two touchdowns. However, two costly turnovers proved to be the nail in the coffin. Mateer fumbled twice and threw an interception, all of which resulted in Georgia touchdowns. Fans on social media were quick to call for Mateer's benching, citing that two of his turnovers could have easily been game-winning throws.

One fan remarked, "If Mateer takes care of the ball, we hang in that game and have a shot to win it." The Sooners will look to bounce back in their next game against the No. 1 Texas Longhorns on October 10.
