‘Middle powers’, like Malaysia, can shape global decisions when major powers can’t agree, Mohamad Hasan says at UN general assembly

NEW YORK, September 27 — Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan emphasized the crucial role of middle powers like Malaysia and regional organizations such as Asean in shaping global decisions when major powers are unable to reach an agreement, according to his statement at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). He highlighted that despite being classified as middle powers, Malaysia and similar nations represent the global majority and must actively participate in decision-making processes.

"We are the global majority. As I said earlier, we must not simply live with the consequences of choices made elsewhere. We must help shape those choices," he stated. He further emphasized the importance of regional organizations in bringing their diverse perspectives to the forefront of global debates. "We must have the confidence to speak for our regions, not be spoken for," he added.

Speaking amidst growing global uncertainty, Mohamad called for rebuilding trust in proactive governance and multilateralism. Despite acknowledging the imperfections of the UN, he affirmed Malaysia's commitment to the international body, stating that Malaysia would continue to contribute to making the UN worthy of the trust placed in it.

Asean, which includes 11 member states spanning Southeast Asia, plays a significant part in promoting peace, stability, and economic growth in the region. During his visit to New York from September 23 to 27, Mohamad represented Malaysia in the 81st session of the UNGA.
