LASTMA impounds 84 vehicles over traffic violations in Lagos

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, conducted a major enforcement operation targeting commercial and private vehicles violating traffic rules across key locations in Lagos. The operation, which took place over the weekend, covered areas such as Idumota, Iddo, Ijora-Olopa, Costain, and Onipanu. LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, stated that the primary concern was commercial buses driving against traffic and reversing unlawfully along the one-way section between Iddo and Idumota via the Cater Bridge.

He emphasized the extreme danger this poses to motorists, commuters, and pedestrians, as it can lead to hazardous situations and potentially devastating collisions. During the operation, some LASTMA officers were reportedly assaulted and injured, with suspected miscreants who attacked them and damaged agency vehicles subsequently arrested.

LASTMA has repeatedly warned transport operators and road users against converting under-bridge areas, road setbacks, and unauthorized spaces into illegal garages, as these practices obstruct traffic management and endanger public safety. The agency assured it would continue enforcement operations to promote compliance with traffic laws, discourage dangerous driving, and ensure public safety.
