Lamu port receives first heavy machinery cargo for Sh2 trillion Dangote refinery

NAIROBI, Kenya - The Port of Lamu has received its first shipment of heavy construction machinery for the planned Sh2 trillion Dangote East Africa Refinery, ahead of an upcoming groundbreaking ceremony. The arrival of the MV Da Yang, carrying 2,930 metric tonnes of construction equipment, marks a significant milestone in the project's preparations.

This marks the first oil refinery in northern Kenya and is expected to process crude oil from various regions, including Turkana County. Kenya Ports Authority CEO Captain William Ruto received the vessel and presented Captain Wang Shengli, the master, with a certificate of first call and a plaque. The cargo signifies the government's commitment to the project's success, which will serve as a game-changer for the region.

The port is now poised to play a crucial role in the refinery's construction and subsequent operations, handling petroleum tankers and other cargo as the facility develops along Kenya's northern coast. Ruto assured shipping partners that the port is ready to handle the increased cargo volumes associated with the project. The refinery is part of a broader plan to establish an industrial and petroleum-processing hub around Lamu, benefiting the region and regional markets.
