Lamu port receives first heavy machinery cargo for Sh2 trillion Dangote refinery

Nairobi, Kenya — The Port of Lamu has successfully received its first shipment of heavy construction machinery for the highly anticipated Sh2 trillion Dangote East Africa Refinery, setting the stage for a groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for the following week. The vessel, MV Da Yang, delivered 2,930 metric tonnes of specialized equipment, a significant milestone in the project that aims to establish the first oil refinery in northern Kenya.

Captain William Ruto, Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), received the cargo upon its arrival, bestowing upon master Captain Wang Shengli a certificate of first call and a commemorative plaque. KPA highlighted the vital role the cargo will play in constructing the refinery, which is anticipated to process crude oil sourced from Turkana County and other regions of East and southern Africa.

Ruto expressed optimism about the project's potential impact, stating that the arrival of the MV Da Yang underscores the government's dedication to its success and positions Lamu Port as a pivotal player in the region's industrial landscape. The port is poised to handle a range of marine and petroleum logistics, including petroleum tankers, as the refinery nears operational readiness.

The successful handling of MV Da Yang signifies Lamu Port's preparedness to manage the substantial and specialized cargo expected during the construction phase. Ruto assured stakeholders that the port remains fully equipped to accommodate the increased cargo volumes associated with the refinery's development. KPA remains committed to ensuring efficient vessel turnaround, seamless cargo operations, and a customer-centric approach as the project moves forward.

The Dangote East Africa Refinery is part of a larger vision by the Dangote Group to create a comprehensive industrial and petroleum-processing hub in northern Kenya, expected to bolster regional economic growth and bolster market connections throughout the area.
