Korea blows big lead to settle for silver in men's epee fencing team event

Korea's men's epee fencing team team displayed a lack of focus, relinquishing a substantial advantage to settle for a silver medal at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. The squad comprising Park Sang-young, Jang Hyo-min, Nam Yeon-ho, and Kwon O-min fell short to Kazakhstan's Kirill Prokhodov, Ruslan Kurbanov, Vadim Sharlaimov, and Yerlik Sertay by a narrow margin of 43-42 at the Aichi Sky Expo in Tokoname, located south of the principal host city, Nagoya.

None of the three Korean fencers managed to reach the pinnacle of individual medal prospects, yet they united their efforts to secure Korea's 12th consecutive men's epee team medal. Fencing team events unfold through nine one-on-one bouts. Each bout lasts for three minutes, concluding as soon as one team's score reaches a multiple of five. A team triumphs when it accumulates 45 points first or surpasses the opponent's total at the end of the ninth bout.

Park and Prokhodov each earned three points in the opening bout, followed by Jang outperforming Kurbanov 3-1 in the subsequent bout, leading Korea to a 6-4 advantage. The margin expanded to 12-9 after Nam triumphed in his bout against Sharlaimov. However, Park's decisive 7-1 victory over Sertay propelled Korea to a commanding score of 19, which should have been sufficient to clinch the gold.
