Filmmaker Mike Leigh wins top prize at Spain festival with ‘last film’

SAN SEBASTIAN, Spain — Renowned British filmmaker Mike Leigh claimed the coveted top prize at the San Sebastian film festival yesterday for his latest social drama, Tender Loving Care. The 83-year-old, who is battling an undisclosed illness, is expected to deliver his final film. The Golden Shell for Best Film was awarded to the movie, which delves into the lives of social workers aiding vulnerable individuals.

In a video message, Leigh expressed his gratitude, acknowledging the honor of winning the prestigious accolade. "I’m so sorry I can’t be with you. What a great honour it is," he said, adding, "Thank you and love to everybody."

The acclaimed filmmaker has previously been recognized for his work at Cannes (1996 for Secrets and Lies) and Venice (2004 for Vera Drake). Tender Loving Care also earned a joint win for Best Screenplay at the Spanish festival. Additionally, actress Kate O’Flynn was honored with the Silver Shell for her outstanding performance in the film. Swedish filmmaker Amanda Kernell was recognized for Best Director for her movie Brace Your Heart.
