Fernandez downs Gibson to claim Singapore Open crown

Singaporean Leylah Fernandez claimed the Singapore Open crown on Sunday, defeating Australia's Talia Gibson with a 7-5, 6-0 victory. The world number 31 was overpowered by the unseeded Australian in a nail-biting match at the WTA 500 tournament held at OCBC Arena. Fernandez secured her first title since the Japan Open in October and her sixth WTA title overall.

Fernandez expressed that she had been working tirelessly throughout the year to strike a balance between attacking and defending. She attributed her success to the fact that everything clicked into place at the right moment in the final. Fernandez had previously defeated top seed Mirra Andreeva in the quarter-finals and come from a set down to beat 25th-ranked Maja Chwalinska in the semis to reach the final.

Gibson showcased her resilience, managing to recover from service breaks and setting up set points at 5-4 on Fernandez's serve. However, Fernandez managed to hold and ultimately wore down Gibson, taking the opener 7-5. The second set was a walkover for Fernandez as Gibson made multiple unforced errors and dropped the first three service games.

In a crucial moment, Gibson netted a return, sealing Fernandez's triumph. Fernandez revealed that Gibson's fighting spirit had broken her a few times, but she managed to stay composed and trust her instincts. She emphasized the importance of focusing on the ball and letting her training take over, which paid off in the end.
