Current erase early deficit, rout Summit 4-1 behind Hopkins’ hat trick

Haley Hopkins scored three goals as the Kansas City Current secured a 4-1 victory over the Denver Summit on Saturday. The Current, who had never lost at home this season, responded strongly after Summit captain Lindsey Heaps put Denver ahead in the 13th minute. Hopkins equalized in the 39th minute, finishing a cross from Michelle Cooper.

Less than ten minutes later, she raced behind Denver’s backline and beat goalkeeper Abby Smith to a through ball to take the lead. Chawinga set up Hopkins' third goal on a breakaway in the 57th minute. Chawinga also added a goal and an assist at CPKC Stadium for the Current, who outshot Denver 22-7 and dominated possession with six shots.

Summit goalkeeper Abby Smith made six crucial saves, while Kansas City's Lorena made two. Hopkins sealed the win in the 76th minute with her second goal, finishing a backheel pass from Vanessa DiBernardo. Maiara Niehues scored for visiting Angel City, giving the Washington Spirit a third straight loss. Marie Müller scored an 85th-minute equalizer for the Portland Thorns, which they held until the end for a 1-1 draw against the Dash.

Houston Dash's Kat Rader gave the Dash an early lead in the 10th minute but was undone by Houston's Marie Müller, who scored an equalizer just before halftime.
