Cavy chaos: Hundreds flock to New Zealand’s biggest guinea pig show as Claremont Girl Clash of Hearts crowned champion

TAUPO (New Zealand) saw hundreds of guinea pig enthusiasts gather at the National Guinea Pig Show, where the top prize of Best in Show went to Claremont Girl Clash of Hearts. Nearly 300 guinea pigs were displayed at the Great Lakes Centre, with some owners bringing their support animals. Competitors traveled from across New Zealand, while the judges flew in from England and the Czech Republic.

The judges evaluated each pig based on coat color, condition, and overall health. Many competitors spent months preparing their animals, feeding them special diets and meticulously grooming them to achieve their best possible appearance. Griffin Hopkins' pig, Geode Ember, secured second place in its class, while Josh Wilson-Jones' black short-haired guinea pig from Timaru claimed the title of national champion.

Wilson-Jones, a teenager, dedicated himself to grooming every single hair on his pig before presenting it to the judges. Tahlia Chapman and her son Griffin Hopkins also had several pigs competing in multiple classes, including one rough coat Rex that won its category. Chapman, who initially had low expectations, said she loves the show for the sense of community and support it provides.

Judge Sophie Barnard of England examined a ticked guinea pig, emphasizing the importance of body condition for a healthy cavies, which she attributed to a balanced diet of grains, fresh vegetables, and hay.
