Boeing projects Ghana’s national airline could resume operations within 18 months

Boeing forecasts that Ghana’s national airline could return to operation within 18 months, given the right government support and structural measures. This projection emerged from conversations between President John Dramani Mahama and senior Boeing officials in New York during the 81st United Nations General Assembly. The aerospace giant indicated its willingness to collaborate with the Ghanaian government to revamp the national carrier, projecting that an 18-month timeline could be feasible under the appropriate conditions.

President Mahama emphasized that Ghana’s partnership with Boeing should transcend the mere acquisition of aircraft. He envisioned a strategic alliance that would foster an aviation ecosystem, generating skilled employment, transferring technology, bolstering the industrial base, and positioning Ghana as a key aviation and logistics hub in West Africa.

He stated, "We want a strategic partnership that helps us build an aviation ecosystem—creating skilled jobs, transferring technology, strengthening our industrial base and positioning Ghana as an aviation and logistics hub for West Africa." President Mahama further explained that his administration is seeking partners who are committed to investing in the nation, building its capacity, and sharing in the prosperity generated.

Boeing was presented as one such potential strategic partner. The discussions centered on a comprehensive collaboration aimed at bolstering the national carrier while developing the technical, human, and infrastructural capabilities necessary for maintaining Ghana’s aviation industry. A primary proposal under consideration is the establishment of a regional Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility in Ghana.

This facility would cater to airlines not only in Ghana but also across West Africa and other parts of the continent. The partnership would also encompass aviation training, skills development, and technology transfer, potentially creating high-value employment opportunities for young Ghanaians. This initiative is part of President Mahama’s broader Reset Ghana agenda, which seeks to draw strategic international investment and enhance Ghana’s standing as a regional aviation, trade, and logistics hub.
