Assam Police Bust Major Musk Deer Smuggling Bid, Seize 6 Illegal Musk Pods

The Assam Police successfully thwarted a major attempt to smuggle illegal Musk Deer bladders, seizing six of the highly sought-after products weighing a total of 158 grams. The operation, conducted in Medhikuchi under the jurisdiction of Sonapur Police Station in Kamrup Metro, netted two suspects from Arunachal Pradesh. Acting on intelligence, a joint team comprising Assistant Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) East Guwahati Anurag Sarmah, Officer-in-Charge of Sonapur Police Station, and the Special Operations Group (SOG) East of the Police Commissionerate Guwahati, conducted the raid.

The suspects, identified as 48-year-old Moge Doye and 44-year-old Nokphua Wangsa, are currently under interrogation. The Musk Deer bladders, also known as musk pods or glands, are prized in international black markets for use in traditional Asian medicines, perfumery, and cosmetics. A kilogram of raw deer musk can sell for $45,000 to $50,000, making the seized amount a significant setback for regional poaching networks.

The Himalayan Musk Deer, the species from which the bladders were harvested, is categorized as Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) due to extensive poaching. The seizure highlights the threats posed to Himalayan ecosystems and will likely lead to further legal action against the accused.
