[Asian Games] S. Korea captures gold in women's sabre fencing team event

South Korea secured victory in the women's sabre fencing team event at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on Sunday, marking the nation's fourth fencing title of the Games. The squad comprised Choi Se-bin, Jeon Ha-young, Seo Ji-yeon, and Kim Jeong-mi, who defeated Japan's Misaki Emura, Yui Sano, Yuina Kaneko, and Seri Ozaki with a score of 45-31 at the Aichi Sky Expo in Tokoname, located south of Nagoya.

Not a single South Korean fencer had earned an individual medal in the competition prior to this triumph, yet they triumphed as a team. Choi had previously represented South Korea in the 2023 Asian Games, securing bronze behind Uzbekistan and Japan. The country concluded the fencing competition with a total of four gold medals, four silver medals, and two bronze medals.

Fencing team events consist of nine head-to-head bouts, each lasting three minutes, but concluding as soon as one team's score reaches a multiple of five. A team secures the event by achieving a score of 45 first, or having more points than the opponent by the end of the ninth bout. Choi initiated the match, defeating Emura 5-2, followed by Jeon claiming the next bout against Sano by a score of 5-4. Seo successfully outmaneuvered Kaneko's initial push and contributed to the team's eventual victory.
