Anthropic touts AI-led biology discovery

U.S. artificial intelligence startup Anthropic has announced its first discovery from its molecular biology lab, achieved by its Claude model. This breakthrough is being presented as evidence that AI can accelerate basic research. Enzyme systems in nature have been instrumental in major biological advancements, including the foundation of the biotech industry and the DNA-copying technique used in many medical tests.

According to Anthropic, approximately 950 AI-powered software agents, under the guidance of Claude, scrutinized a DNA sequence database for 21 hours. This exhaustive search yielded over 200,000 genes for a particular enzyme type, from which 20 were identified for further examination—a task that would typically consume weeks or even months for expert scientists.

The level of involvement from Anthropic's researchers was minimal, restricted to giving initial instructions and overseeing the lab experiments, while the AI agents operated autonomously, determining which leads to investigate. Notably, one of the agents identified an intriguing pattern in viruses that infect bacteria, a detail that human scientists had seemingly overlooked.

This pattern involves a sequence of short, repeating DNA pieces adjacent to two genes, one of which is known for encoding an enzyme.
