After turbulent summer, England head into winter schedule

England’s recent summer has been a roller-coaster ride, culminating in a resounding win over Sri Lanka in their last One Day International (ODI) series. However, the team will not be taking a break as they embark on a busy winter schedule. Captain Ben Stokes’ sudden retirement, the dismissal of Brendon McCullum as Test coach, and numerous off-field incidents have marred the period.

The squad has faced challenges since suffering a 2-1 defeat to New Zealand in a Test series, with Stokes’ departure and McCullum’s sacking, although he retains his role as coach for ODI and T20 teams. Stokes withdrew from the second test against New Zealand in June following a breach of team curfew, subsequently announcing his retirement due to fatigue.

Joe Root has taken over as captain and led England to a 3-0 Test series victory over Pakistan, who struggled with internal issues. Nonetheless, the team’s focus shifts to a tri-series in Pakistan, which includes Sri Lanka, followed by three ODIs and five T20s in Australia. England will then face a three-Test series in South Africa under the guidance of former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming, who aims to introduce a more measured approach to the Test side.

Fleming also highlighted three ODIs in South Africa and a one-off, pink ball, day-night Test match against Australia in Melbourne in March, marking the 150th anniversary of Test cricket.
