A month after Nepal's floods, husband still hopes his wife can be found

Almost a year has passed since the Nepal-Tibet floods that claimed more than 5,500 lives and left hundreds unaccounted for. Bhavin Patel, the husband of Reshma Patel, remains steadfast in his hope that his wife can still be found alive. Reshma, a frequent traveler, had planned to undertake a two-week pilgrimage to the revered Mount Kailash Mansarovar region in the Himalayas before the tragic event. Her husband, hesitant to leave their two school-age children behind, stayed in Newcastle while she embarked on her journey.

On August 26, a torrential downpour swept through the Nepal-Tibet border region, leaving devastation in its wake. A month later, Reshma is among the unaccounted-for, along with 33 other Australians. Bhavin believes that his wife and others may be in a remote area on the Tibetan side of the border, where they could have survived despite the scale of the disaster and the region's intricate geography.

The Australian government, aware of the distressing situation of the 34 Australians still missing, is committed to supporting their welfare and ensuring they receive accurate and timely information. Bhavin has been receiving daily updates from the Australian government, but these updates have since ceased. In response, Bhavin plans to return to Tibet to continue searching for his wife when it becomes possible to access the region on the ground.

Bhavin's unwavering hope for Reshma's survival contrasts sharply with the Nepal government's initial reluctance to accept assistance from countries such as China, the US, and India. However, the international community remains determined to help, urging the governments to accept their aid and keep searching for the thousands of people unaccounted for.
