27 killed in two separate mass shootings near South Africa’s biggest cities

Two mass shootings in South Africa have claimed the lives of 27 people, with 34 others injured. The attacks occurred hours apart, with the first taking place on Saturday evening outside a Johannesburg bar and the second occurring early Sunday morning outside a Cape Town entertainment venue.

A group of eight gunmen stormed the Johannesburg bar, opening fire on customers outside before continuing their assault inside. The attackers also set two vehicles ablaze before fleeing the scene. Police have not yet determined a motive for the Johannesburg attack, which left thirteen men and four women dead.

In the Cape Town incident, ten individuals were killed outside the entertainment venue, with a further eleven sustaining injuries. The victims died at the scene and in a nearby hospital. Like the Johannesburg attack, authorities have not identified a motive for the Cape Town shooting, which left ten people dead.

These incidents follow a recent killing spree in Durban, where 11 people were killed when gunmen invaded a house in the KwaMakhutha township. Illegal weapons are widespread in South Africa, and the country has struggled to control gang-related gun violence for years. The nation experiences an average of 60 murders daily, despite efforts to curb the problem.

President Cyril Ramaphosa recently labeled organized crime as the most immediate threat to South Africa's democracy, society, and economic development. In an effort to reduce armed violence, the military has partnered with police in areas with the highest murder rates.
