Ward appointed Liverpool’s sporting director

Liverpool has appointed Julian Ward as the club's new sporting director, replacing Richard Hughes who left in September. This marks Ward's second time in the role at Anfield, having served from 2022-23. Ward expressed excitement about the opportunity. He joined Liverpool in 2012 as European scouting manager for Spain and Portugal, was promoted to assistant sporting director in 2020, and briefly left in 2022.

He returned in 2024 as Fenway Sports Group's technical director, overseeing player development and the academy. FSG president Mike Gordon praised Ward's extensive industry experience and suitability for the role. The appointment aims to provide stability after a period of transition. Ward's previous tenure included securing key signings like Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah, and his global contacts and negotiation skills will be valuable.

His current responsibilities include long-term deals for young talents like Rio Ngumoha and potential new contracts for Alisson and Virgil van Dijk. Under both Arne Slot and Andoni Iraola, Ward will have more influence in shaping Liverpool's football operations.
