Volpe hits 2-run double in 6th inning and Yankees beat Orioles 6-3 for doubleheader split

Anthony Volpe made his debut at shortstop for the New York Yankees on August 31, and he delivered a crucial two-run double in the sixth inning of their nightcap victory against the Baltimore Orioles, resulting in a doubleheader split. Ryan McMahon contributed to the rally with a run-scoring single in the fifth, while rookie Spencer Jones added an RBI single in the six-inning stretch.

Volpe propelled the Yankees to an early 4-0 lead with a fly ball that hit right fielder Rece Hinds and bounced into the stands, propelling the Yankees into a commanding 6-3 victory.

Volpe's performance marked his first appearance at shortstop since August 1, and he has been batting .265 (11 for 49) with nine RBIs in 14 games since his call-up from the minors on September 10. Brent Headrick, who made his 81st big league appearance, sealed the seventh by striking out Hinds after loading the bases. Alexander Cornielle made his big league debut in the ninth, allowing a homer to Dylan Beavers and an RBI double by Taveras, ultimately finishing the game by striking out Christian Franklin with a sweeper.

Baltimore clinched its second consecutive losing season, while New York's Pete Alonso went 1 for 3 with two walks, and Heliot Ramos and Luis García Jr. continued their strong offensive performances. Baltimore's starting pitcher Brandon Young (9-6) conceded one run and two hits over five innings. Baltimore's next starting pitcher, Shane Baz (6-15, 4.11), is set to pitch Sunday, weather permitting.
