UPSA withholds students’ graduation after over 500 altered results in IT system

The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) has suspended the graduation of certain postgraduate students following an investigation that revealed the manipulation of over 500 results involving 178 students. Vice-Chancellor, Professor John Kwaku Mensah Mawutor, disclosed the incident at the university’s 18th Congregation, emphasizing the seriousness of the breach of academic integrity.

According to Mawutor, some students colluded with unscrupulous individuals who accessed the university’s IT system and altered academic results. The university’s IT team worked tirelessly to trace and restore the affected results, for which the Director of ICT, James Amena, and his team are commended. The investigation led to the identification of the culprits, with some students admitting to paying money to change their results.

While others denied involvement, some confessed to collecting money from their peers. UPSA considers the conduct highly unacceptable and has warned that it will not compromise the integrity of its academic processes. Some of the implicated students were scheduled to graduate during the ceremony but had their graduation withheld pending further investigation.

Mawutor assured the university community that the institution would continue to take measures to safeguard the credibility of its academic records and maintain academic integrity.
