UK judge stops deportation of Nigerian man

In a UK court, a judge named Priya Solanki has halted the deportation of a Nigerian man named Tunde Alao. Alao, who arrived in the UK in 2004 or 2005, served two years and seven months in prison for fraud involving fake driving licences. The deportation was planned by the Home Office once he completed his sentence. However, Solanki rejected the move, stating that Alao was not a "serious threat" to British society.

Alao had been living in the UK illegally and applied for limited leave to remain in the country in 2020. He was granted this in February 2021. In 2022, he was found guilty of conspiracy to defraud for producing fake driving licences between 2019 and 2022. Despite the fraud being unsuccessful, it could have potentially generated a significant amount of money.

Upon his release from prison in August 2023, Alao pleaded guilty to the charge and was ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £149. He has since been working part-time and has been actively involved in the community since October 2023. His employer and Solanki both testified in court, affirming his good conduct and integration into UK society.

Solanki ruled that Alao's re-conviction probability was low, stating that he posed minimal risk to the UK.
