U.S., China reach $30 billion tariff deal after Trump-Xi summit

The United States and China have struck a deal to reduce tariffs on $30 billion worth of non-sensitive goods, as part of a trade package signed at a summit between President Trump and Xi Jinping, according to the White House. This development could signal a thaw in the trade war that has impacted the two nations since last year. The agreement would potentially lower prices on various consumer goods, easing inflationary pressures on American shoppers.

Under the terms of the deal, the Chinese government will reduce tariffs on certain agricultural products, seafood, wood products, cosmetics, and medical devices. Meanwhile, the U.S. will cut tariffs on small appliances, toys, holiday decorations, and children's car seats. Additionally, China has committed to importing 10 million metric tons of U.S. coal in 2027 and again in 2028, a move that would be a significant shift from the country's previous stance.

Notably, China was a top-five importer of U.S. coal before the trade war led to a decline in imports.

While the White House fact sheet provided less clarity on the future of crucial rare earth minerals, which have been a focal point of the trade dispute, it did emphasize the ongoing efforts to address supply chain shortages related to these minerals. Both nations are working to ensure that shipment levels return to appropriate levels, with the ultimate goal of resolving the longstanding trade issues.
