Trump rejects Iran’s proposal for deal to reopen Hormuz

US President Donald Trump has rejected Iran's proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within a week, rejecting the Iranian claim of imminent victory. The waterway, pivotal to global energy supply, is currently a focal point of the ongoing stalemate between the US and Iran, which has persisted for nearly seven months. In response to the Iranian proposal, Trump stated that he accepted the potential for a deal but ultimately dismissed it.

Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian, who was en route back to Tehran from the UN General Assembly in New York, confirmed that the proposal was developed in coordination with Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei. Iran's plan outlines a cessation of hostilities across the Middle East, including Lebanon, and adherence to a memorandum of understanding signed with the US earlier this year, which includes the release of frozen Iranian assets, lifting of sanctions on Iranian oil, and an end to the US naval blockade.

The conditions for Iran to reopen Hormuz would take effect the seventh day of the truce. Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan criticized the international community for failing to uphold its responsibility to keep Hormuz open, while Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov expressed readiness to contribute to regional stabilization.

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi proposed a seven-day plan for the potential reopening of the strait and normal maritime passage restoration. However, Iran has expressed skepticism about meeting the US demands and anticipates a continuation of the US bombing campaign.
