TikTok settles lawsuit over youth safety concerns for at least $100 million

The social media giant TikTok has reached a settlement to pay at least $100 million to the state of Alabama, following allegations that the platform negatively impacts the mental health of young users. The case, which was set to go to trial, was resolved just before proceedings began. Alabama accused TikTok of creating addictive content tailored to users' interests, which they claimed was harmful to children.

As part of the agreement, TikTok must implement several safety features for teens in Alabama, including the ability to select a non-personalized content feed, remove cosmetic filters, enforce a two-hour daily time limit, and ban nighttime usage. The company will also prompt young users to take breaks after 15 minutes of continuous use.

Additionally, TikTok will pay Alabama $100 million in restitution and remediation, potentially reaching up to $300 million under certain conditions. Other states that reach qualifying settlements with TikTok may receive additional funds. The settlement also includes enhanced parental controls, stronger age verification measures, and stricter content moderation protocols.
