TikTok agrees to settle with Alabama state over teen safety

TikTok and its Chinese parent company ByteDance have reached a $100 million settlement with the state of Alabama, aimed at addressing concerns over teen safety and mental health. As part of the agreement, the company will implement measures such as a two-hour daily usage limit, restricted access for children, and pauses after 15 minutes of use. If 40 other states sign similar agreements, the payout could increase to $300 million.

Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall initiated the lawsuit against TikTok last year, alleging that the platform's addictive nature and algorithm push users towards violent and self-harm content. The state claimed TikTok was partially responsible for a mental health crisis among teens and an increase in emergency room visits. The settlement also requires TikTok to address issues like its "Kids Mode" feature, which the lawsuit argued was ineffective for protecting children.

This agreement resolves all cases selected for trial against TikTok, including claims by five young individuals and a Kentucky school district. The lawsuit accused the app of falsely advertising age restrictions on app stores while still collecting data on users' viewing habits. The settlement marks a significant step for Alabama parents, providing them with better control over their children's social media usage and ensuring greater safety.
