Sharjah summer travel surge: Millions of taxi and bus journeys recorded in 2026

Sharjah’s transport network saw a significant increase in passenger journeys during the 2026 summer holiday, as reported by the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA). Between June and August, the authority recorded over 6.6 million taxi trips, alongside substantial numbers of intercity and public bus services. More than 2.4 million passengers utilized public bus services, reflecting the continued usage of diverse transport options by both residents and visitors traveling within the emirate and to other destinations.

In addition, marine transport also contributed to the summer travel surge, completing 756 trips and carrying 12,240 passengers. These figures highlight the crucial role of various modes of transport in maintaining mobility throughout the emirate.

The transport authority emphasized its ongoing commitment to developing safe, flexible, and sustainable transport services, with a primary focus on enhancing comfort and safety for families. This approach also aims to expand mobility options, improve traffic flow, and support overall quality of life, aligning with the objectives of the Year of the Family 2026. The authority’s initiatives seek to elevate the travel experience for both residents and visitors across Sharjah.

Sharjah Airport also experienced a notable rise in passenger traffic during the peak summer week, handling over 390,000 passengers. The emirate is preparing to accommodate a total of 3 million summer travelers, with the introduction of on-demand bus services that can be summoned directly through a tap. Furthermore, Sharjah authorities deployed 155 buses and conducted 9,760 intercity trips to cater to the heightened demand during the Eid holiday.
