S. Korea again highlights humanitarian handling of NK POWs

MEXICO CITY — South Korean officials have once more emphasized the importance of adhering to international law and humanitarian principles when handling North Korean prisoners of war (POWs). This stance comes in the wake of Ukraine revealing the transfer of two North Korean soldiers, captured by Ukrainian forces during the conflict with Russia, to South Korea.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made this announcement during a United Nations address earlier in the week. Following Zelenskyy's disclosure, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and his administration stated that Ukraine had violated a confidentiality agreement to prevent the transfer from being disclosed, citing concerns for the soldiers' safety should the information become public.

Subsequently, reports from Ukrainian media outlets suggested that a Ukrainian presidential source had denied the existence of a confidentiality agreement with South Korea. While Lee Jae Myung was in Mexico City for a state visit, a South Korean presidential official addressed the situation, reinforcing the South Korean government's commitment to upholding humanitarian standards in its dealings with North Korean POWs.
