Russian foreign minister accuses Europe of blocking Ukraine peace talks

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has accused Europe of obstructing peace negotiations in Ukraine during his address at the United Nations General Assembly. Lavrov claimed that the European Union is actively working to prevent talks supported by the U.S. government, stating, "Europe is doing everything it can to thwart peace talks in which the Trump administration is interested."

The current conflict in Ukraine has seen a significant increase in hostilities, with both Russian and Ukrainian forces escalating their attacks since the deadliest summer since 2022, the year Russia initiated its invasion. Russian attacks in Ukraine on Saturday killed four people, while Kyiv continued to target Russian infrastructure such as oil refineries and industrial sites using long-range drones.

Despite efforts led by the U.S., a permanent ceasefire and peace deal have yet to be achieved. President Trump expressed hope that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy would reach an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Lavrov reiterated Moscow's stance, asserting that the aims of the ongoing military operation will ultimately be achieved, emphasizing the threat to Russian security and the desire to restore peaceful life in the region.

Earlier in the day, Lavrov met with his German counterpart, Johann Wadephul, the first encounter between the two foreign ministers since the war began. The meeting came amid heightened tensions between Berlin and Moscow, with Germany accusing Russia of orchestrating a drone attack on Leipzig airport, and both nations ordering the closure of each other's consulates.

European countries, including Germany, have expressed concerns over heightened Russian sabotage activities on their territory. Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met at the U.N. General Assembly on Saturday, with Trump hoping that Zelenskyy would make concessions to Putin. Zelenskyy, speaking on social media, accused Russia of escalating its attacks daily and urged the world to respond more strongly to prevent further war escalation.
