RCMP remind drivers to stop for school buses after two Kelowna students are struck by a vehicle

Two elementary school students were seriously injured on Thursday after being struck by a vehicle in Kelowna’s Upper Mission. The incident occurred on Arbor View Drive after the students exited the bus. According to Kelowna RCMP Colonel Steven Lang, the school bus had just dropped off the children when they were struck by an SUV coming head-on in the opposite direction.

Both students were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Arbor View Drive was closed for several hours while police investigated the collision. One individual was taken into custody but has since been released, with no charges filed at this time. Police are investigating whether alcohol played a role in the incident and whether the school bus had activated its flashing red lights.

The collision has prompted the RCMP to remind drivers of the law, which requires motorists to stop on both sides of a school bus when its lights are flashing and stop sign is extended. Until the stop sign is turned off, drivers must remain stopped before proceeding. Several other students were on the bus at the time of the incident and witnessed what happened.

Central Okanagan Public Schools Superintendent Jon Rever expressed deep sorrow over the incident, stating that their focus is currently on supporting the students, families, and staff.
