RCMP remind drivers to stop for school buses after two Kelowna students are struck by a vehicle

Two elementary school students were seriously injured on Thursday after being struck by a vehicle in Kelowna's Upper Mission. The incident occurred on Arbor View Drive as the students exited their school bus. Kelowna RCMP Col. Steven Lang stated that the bus had just dropped off the children when they were hit by an SUV traveling in the opposite direction. Both students were rushed to the hospital with serious injuries. Arbor View Drive was closed for hours as police investigated the incident.

One individual was taken into custody but later released without charges. Police have not yet determined if alcohol played a role in the collision, though they are investigating other potential factors. They are also assessing whether the school bus activated its flashing red lights when required by law.

Lang emphasized the importance of drivers stopping for school buses on both sides of the bus, remaining stopped until the stop sign and flashing red lights are deactivated. Several other students remained on the bus at the time of the accident. Central Okanagan Public Schools Superintendent Jon Rever expressed deep sorrow over the incident, stating that their focus is currently on supporting the affected students and families.
