PSC calls for mainstreaming of mental wellness services in workplaces

The Public Service Commission (PSC) has advocated for the integration of mental health support and counseling services into workplaces, as concerns about employee mental well-being continue to grow. During a discussion at the 5th National Mental Wellness and Counselling Conference in Nairobi on Friday, PSC Vice-Chairperson Mary Kimonye announced that the Commission has implemented measures to support the mental health of public employees.

"The rise in mental health challenges in workplaces across both public and private sectors is a growing concern. It is imperative that we mainstream mental wellness services to tackle this issue head-on," Kimonye stated.

Kimonye revealed that the government has established a specialized counseling department within the State Department for Public Service and Human Capital Development. Professional counselors are also employed to assist public officers and citizens alike. "The government has set up a dedicated counseling department under the State Department for Public Service and Human Capital Development. We have also hired professional counselors who are accessible to both public officers and members of the public," she explained.

Kimonye highlighted that the PSC's disciplinary procedures are designed to safeguard public servants from discrimination or mistreatment. At the same conference, the Chief Guest, Principal Secretary for Public Service and Human Capital Development, provided an update on the country's progress in addressing mental health. The government has introduced a toll-free telephone service that offers free professional counseling to both members of the public and public officials.

The 5th National Mental Wellness and Counselling Conference, with the theme "Creating Mentally Healthy Workplaces: From Awareness to Action," convened representatives from both sectors to discuss advancements, challenges, recommendations, and actionable steps towards enhancing mental wellness in work environments.
