Prozorova says physio’s pressure led to Singapore Open withdrawal

Russia's Tatiana Prozorova withdrew from the Singapore Open semi-finals due to pressure from a WTA physiotherapist who diagnosed her with concussion after she was struck by a ball, according to the 22-year-old. The athlete's retirement from both the singles event and her doubles quarter-final on Friday came after she was hit in the face during a match, which led to her team discussing the situation with tournament organisers.

Prozorova explained that the physio insisted on conducting a specific test on court, which she found challenging given her fatigue from playing over three hours each of the last three days. Despite her team and organisers supporting her desire to continue, the final decision rested with the WTA. The on-site medical team and tournament physician assessed her, finding that concussion protocols were in place to ensure player safety.

Under the WTA Physical Incapacity Rule and Concussion Protocol, a player diagnosed with a concussion is not permitted to compete and must complete a graduated return-to-play protocol before resuming play. Prozorova's successful run to the semi-finals marked a career-best performance.
