PBS to reinforce unity and integrity while remaining in GRS, says president

KOTA KINABALU, Sept 26 — Dr Joachim Gunsalam, president of Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS), stated that the party aims to become a modern, multiracial entity with a focus on integrity and relevance while staying committed to working alongside Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS). The leadership shift in PBS will revolve around three core principles — unity, stability, and integrity — as outlined in the 41st PBS Congress theme, 'Unity, Stability, Integrity'.

Dr Joachim explained that despite differing opinions and strategies, the shared objective is to enhance PBS and champion Sabah's future. He highlighted that the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) struggle is far from over, emphasizing that PBS will continue to play a proactive role in safeguarding the state's rights and interests. The party is determined to ensure that MA63 is not merely a political slogan but translates into tangible improvements that the public can notice.

In terms of unity, Dr Joachim stressed the need for PBS to act as a political home that brings together Sabahans irrespective of their race, religion, district, or background. The party plans to bolster public involvement by expanding the presence of Malays and Muslim Bumiputera, regaining the trust of the Chinese community, and offering more avenues for professionals, women, and younger individuals.

Dr Joachim emphasized that PBS does not pertain to a single race, but rather belongs to everyone who endorses the state's struggle.

Regarding GRS, PBS pledges to remain a loyal, constructive, and principled partner within the coalition. Dr Joachim clarified that this loyalty does not imply the loss of PBS's identity but rather allows the party to continue advocating for Sabah's interests, including MA63, rural development, education, economy, employment opportunities, and overall well-being.

He reiterated that PBS is aligned with GRS, yet PBS stays distinct. Integrity is vital in PBS, with positions not being handed out as gifts but rather as a responsibility that demands leaders to connect with people, understand their challenges, and propose solutions.
