Munich picked as Germany’s candidate to host Summer Games

Munich has been selected as Germany's candidate to host the Summer Olympic Games in 2036, 2040 or 2044. This decision was made by the German Olympic Committee (DOSB) and was announced in Baden-Baden by President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. Munich beat Cologne/Rhine-Ruhr to become Germany's Olympic candidate. The DOSB had a choice between Munich and Berlin, but Berlin withdrew while Hamburg pulled out in May.

Munich's Olympic bid centers on the Olympic Park in the north of the city, which was built for the 1972 Games and has been renovated recently. The Munich bid received a positive response from the public, with a referendum in the autumn of 2025 showing that 66.4% of voters supported hosting the games, on a turnout of 44%. Munich has hosted major sporting events in recent years, including the 2028 Champions League final, the 2031 World Athletics Championships and the 2022 Champions League final.

If Munich is chosen by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), it will be the third time Germany has hosted the Olympics, following the 1936 and 1972 Games.
