Modi-Yogi Governments Change The Face Of Kashi; 52.71 Crore Tourists Visited In 13 Years

Varanasi, the sacred city along the Ganges, has long been a pilgrimage site for millions drawn by its ancient temples and spiritual aura. In recent years, the governments of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath have prioritized modernizing Kashi's infrastructure while safeguarding its heritage. This strategic shift has transformed Kashi into a thriving tourist destination, attracting a record-breaking 52.71 crore (527.1 million) visitors between 2014 and July 2026.

Initially, Kashi welcomed 52.02 crore (5.202 million) Indian tourists and 2.87 crore (287.1 thousand) foreign tourists in 2014. By July 2016, the number of visitors had swelled to 56 crore (5.6 million) Indian and 3.13 crore (313 thousand) foreign tourists. The upward trajectory continued, peaking at 8.54 crore (854 million) Indian and 3.21 crore (321 thousand) foreign tourists by July 2025.

This surge in tourist traffic has catalyzed economic growth, generating demand for accommodations, eateries, boat rides, flowers, garlands, and other services. Consequently, the local economy has flourished, creating new job opportunities for a diverse range of workers. Moreover, enhanced road, rail, and air connectivity, alongside improved public facilities, have bolstered Kashi's appeal as a safe and accessible destination.

The government's commitment to balancing modern amenities with traditional practices has allowed Kashi to evolve without losing its soul. By seamlessly integrating contemporary comforts with centuries-old customs, the city has become an alluring fusion for global travelers seeking not just spiritual solace, but also a taste of India's rich culture and heritage.
