Missing activist Collins Otieno found injured along Thika Road

Activist Collins Otieno was discovered alive after being found injured on Thika Road early Saturday morning. Hussein Khalid, another activist, reported that Otieno was found by a boda boda rider around 4:30am. Khalid described Otieno's state as disoriented, weak, and injured, similar to fellow activist Muteti Mulinge who was also found missing.

Otieno is currently receiving treatment at Neema Uhai Hospital in Kasarani. Otieno was among several activists arrested in Nairobi’s Central Business District during protests against the detention of Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye. His recovery follows Muteti’s own rescue a day earlier in the Lukenya area of Machakos after a period of concern over his whereabouts.

Muteti had left protesters in the CBD to print a petition before disappearing and being found injured and disoriented on Friday. An activist had taken Muteti to court over his disappearance. Otieno reportedly went to report Muteti’s disappearance and assist in locating his colleague before vanishing himself. The details of Otieno’s disappearance and how he ended up on Thika Road have not been disclosed by Khalid.

The circumstances surrounding Otieno’s journey and the protests were not elaborated upon in Khalid's report. The protests were in response to ongoing questions about Dr Kizza Besigye’s disappearance from Nairobi in November 2024 and his subsequent arrival in Uganda, where he was arraigned on treason charges in a military court. Besigye is currently facing treason and misprision of treason charges in Uganda’s High Court.
