MILF peace chief describes Malaysia as 'honest broker'

KUALA LUMPUR: Mohagher Iqbal, head of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) peace panel, praised Malaysia as an "honest broker" in the ongoing talks between the Philippine government and the MILF. Addressing reporters after a one-day meeting of the Peace Implementing Panels, Mohagher emphasized that Malaysia's contribution to the peace process was highly valued. The Philippine government opted not to release a press statement following the event.

Malaysia, a key facilitator since 2001, has consistently aided the two parties in overcoming challenges and moving forward. Mohagher stressed that there is no reason why Malaysia should not continue its role as the facilitator, as both the government and the MILF trust Malaysia's impartiality. The conflict, which has been ongoing since the 1970s, has resulted in an estimated 150,000 deaths, according to AFP.

Expressing optimism, Mohagher reiterated Malaysia's commitment to continue facilitating the peace talks until an exit agreement is reached. He highlighted that Malaysia's role has been instrumental in helping the parties navigate the complex path of the peace process.
