Massive crash upends women’s road race at UCI Worlds: Latest rider updates

A serious crash interrupted the women's elite road race at the UCI World Championships in Montreal on Saturday. At least two riders were hospitalized and several medal contenders had to withdraw. Around 15 riders crashed hard with approximately 95 kilometers remaining on a downhill section along Rue Saint-Urbain. The pile-up disrupted the peloton and left multiple riders needing medical attention.

Australian rider Lauretta Hanson was taken to the hospital on a stretcher and in a neck brace for observation. Swedish rider Caroline Andersson received on-site medical care before also being transported to the hospital. Swedish Cycling Federation president Thomas Backteman reported that she is conscious and receiving treatment, though the severity of her injuries remains unknown.

Swedish rider Julia Borgström stopped to assist Andersson and then withdrew in tears, stating she was physically fine but shaken by the incident. Defending champion Magdeleine Vallières and Spain's Paula Blasi both abandoned, removing two leading medal contenders from the race. Vallières completed the lap despite visible injuries to her leg and hand, while Blasi suffered road rash but claimed she had little pain.

The crash occurred before the final laps, significantly altering the race's outcome. Vallières' emotional return to the finish line with tears marked her withdrawal. Blasi described the chaos of riders taking excessive risks in the bunch.
