Man City found guilty of majority of Premier League financial charges, could face points deduction or expulsion

Manchester City has been found guilty of the majority of charges brought against them by the Premier League for breaching financial rules, according to The Guardian. The Athletic reported that City was cleared on just one of the 115 charges they faced, bringing the total number of charges to 134. The allegations primarily revolve around City's failure to provide accurate financial information to the Premier League, with over 80 charges relating to their duty to provide information "in the utmost good faith."

Other charges concern the club's compliance with UEFA's financial fair play regulations and rules related to the club's profitability and sustainability. City has consistently denied the allegations. No punishment has been decided yet, but the club is expected to appeal the decision, with a 14-day window to do so. If the appeal fails, the panel will then decide on a sanction, which could include a fine, points deduction, suspension from competition, or expulsion from the league.

The investigation into City began in December 2018 following the publication of leaked documents about the club's finances. In 2020, City was handed a two-year ban from UEFA competitions and a €30 million fine for overstating sponsorship revenue in its accounts. However, this ban was later overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

A Manchester City spokesperson stated that the Premier League process is still ongoing and confidential, and that the club expects the Premier League's board and executive to act as an "independent, impartial and fair-minded regulator." UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham urged people not to jump to conclusions until the independent commission's report is studied in detail.
