Khaled Nordin: Malaysia to reinforce defence, especially in Sabah, amid South China Sea tensions

Kota Kinabalu, September 26 - Malaysia must bolster its national defense, particularly in the state of Sabah, in anticipation of potential conflicts arising from the South China Sea tensions, according to Defense Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin. The primary concern for Malaysia, as highlighted by the minister, is the possibility of unforeseen incidents in the region that could have ripple effects on the country, especially in Sabah.

Speaking to reporters following the inauguration of the National Defence Literacy program at the Sabah International Convention Centre, Mohamed Khaled emphasized the concerns among the people of Sabah due to the defense cooperation between the Philippines and the United States. This partnership has facilitated the growth of military bases, such as those on Balabac Island in Palawan, situated approximately 50 kilometers from Banggi Island in Kudat, Sabah.

Nordin expressed respect for the Philippines' right to enhance its defense capabilities through collaboration with the US, yet highlighted the necessity to pay attention to the developments due to Sabah's geographical proximity to the nation. He reiterated that while Malaysia acknowledges the Philippines' autonomy in strengthening its defense, as a neighboring country, it must account for any augmentations in military base development or the presence of military assets in the area from a national security standpoint.
