Khaled Nordin: Malaysia to reinforce defence, especially in Sabah, amid South China Sea tensions

Kota Kinabalu, Sept 26 — Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin has stated that Malaysia must bolster its national defence, particularly in Sabah, as a precaution in anticipation of potential conflicts or incidents in the South China Sea. The minister emphasized that Malaysia's primary concern lies in the possibility of unforeseen events that could have repercussions on the nation, especially considering Sabah's close proximity to the region.

Addressing reporters after the launch of the National Defence Literacy Programme at the Sabah International Convention Centre, Khaled Nordin discussed the apprehensions among residents of Sabah in light of the growing military cooperation between the Philippines and the United States. This development has resulted in the expansion of military bases, including on Balabac Island in Palawan, which is situated approximately 50 kilometers away from Banggi Island in Kudat, Sabah.

While Malaysia respects the Philippines' right to enhance its defence capabilities through cooperation with the US, Nordin stressed that such developments should be taken into account from a national security perspective due to Sabah's geographical proximity. "Every country has its right to strengthen its national defence," said Nordin, "but as a neighbouring country, we are attentive and should take measures that can bolster our country's defence."
