JPJ: Two commercial drivers test positive for methamphetamine at Duta Toll Plaza, 62 notices issued in two‑day operation

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 26 — Two commercial vehicle drivers were found to be using methamphetamine during an integrated drug operation at the Duta Toll Plaza on September 22 and 23, according to the Kuala Lumpur Road Transport Department (JPJ). Director Hamidi Adam revealed that the two individuals tested positive after 48 urine tests were conducted in partnership with the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK).

They were detained under Section 3(1) of the Drug Dependents (Treatment and Rehabilitation) Act 1983 for further tests and investigation. If confirmed as drug addicts, JPJ plans to take action under Section 36 of the Road Transport Act 1987, which may involve suspending their driving licences.

During the two-day operation, 275 commercial vehicles were inspected, resulting in 62 notices being issued for various infractions such as lacking a Goods Driving Licence (GDL) and having tinted windows. Additionally, Hamidi noted that out of 341 drivers inspected since the start of the year, 25 tested positive during the initial urine tests, including 23 goods vehicle drivers, one tour vehicle driver, and one public service vehicle driver.

Hamidi emphasized that JPJ will not tolerate anyone operating under the influence of prohibited substances, as it poses a serious threat to the safety of other road users. He also cautioned transport companies and operators not to underestimate the importance of driver monitoring and vehicle maintenance. The director stressed that ensuring road safety is a collective responsibility, involving both drivers and those managing the vehicles.
