JPJ: Two commercial drivers test positive for methamphetamine at Duta Toll Plaza, 62 notices issued in two‑day operation

KUALA LUMPUR, September 26 — Two commercial vehicle drivers were found to be using methamphetamine at the Duta Toll Plaza during a drug enforcement operation on September 22 and 23, according to the Kuala Lumpur Road Transport Department (JPJ). JPJ director Hamidi Adam revealed that 48 urine tests were conducted in collaboration with the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) to identify the individuals.

Both drivers were taken into custody under Section 3(1) of the Drug Dependants (Treatment and Rehabilitation) Act 1983, pending further tests and investigation. Hamidi stated that if the drivers are confirmed as drug addicts through the legal process, JPJ will take disciplinary action under Section 36 of the Road Transport Act 1987, which could include suspending their driving licences.

During the two-day operation, a total of 275 commercial vehicles were inspected, resulting in 62 notices being issued for various infractions, such as driving without a Goods Driving Licence (GDL) and having tinted windows on their vehicles. Hamidi also reported that out of 341 drivers inspected up to September of the current year, 25 had tested positive for drugs during their initial urine tests, comprising 23 commercial vehicle drivers, one tour vehicle driver, and one public service vehicle driver.

He emphasized that JPJ will not tolerate any form of driving under the influence of banned substances, as it poses a serious threat to the safety of other road users.

Hamidi urged transport companies and operators to take driver monitoring and vehicle maintenance seriously, as ensuring road safety is a shared responsibility among drivers and those managing the vehicles.
