'It's for perpetrator of terrorism to mend its ways': Jaishankar takes aim at Pak in UN

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar addressed the United Nations General Assembly, asserting India's right to defend itself against terrorism while subtly criticizing Pakistan. He emphasized that it is the responsibility of the perpetrator of terrorism to mend its ways, without explicitly naming Pakistan or its Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Jaishankar highlighted that a serial practitioner of terrorism had misrepresented facts during the assembly, and such behavior would not be tolerated.

He underscored India's commitment to its right to defend itself against terrorism and called for action against the threat, which he described as state-sponsored and posing a direct affront to the global order. Jaishankar defended India's zero-tolerance approach towards terrorism, particularly its financial aspects, which should be exposed and countered.

The minister also addressed the broader global impact of conflicts, noting that countries distant from conflicts are being penalized for no fault of theirs, with those most impacted often having the least say. He urged the assembly to acknowledge the true state of affairs, expressing concern over ongoing hostilities in the Gulf, which is exacerbating an already difficult situation.

India emphasized the need for restraint, de-escalation, and the protection of civilians, as well as the uninterrupted flow of energy and commerce.

Jaishankar cited Prime Minister Narendra Modi's stance on the matter, advocating for an end to war and supporting ongoing initiatives to bring peace. He highlighted the importance of safeguarding maritime crews and ensuring stable distribution channels for food grains and energy resources, reaffirming India's readiness to assist in mitigating global food and energy security challenges.
