Grading UConn's heartbreaking loss to Miami (Ohio)

In a heartbreaking loss, UConn fell 24-21 to Miami (Ohio) in Oxford, despite a 14-point lead at one point during the game. Quarterback Kalieb Osborne had a solid performance, completing 17 of 32 passes for 215 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing for 80 yards and a score on 13 attempts. However, the Huskies struggled to maintain momentum after their strong start.

Backup kicker Pierse Stainton hit the go-ahead field goal with just over three minutes remaining in the game. Nevertheless, UConn couldn't capitalize on their final possession as their offense stalled near midfield. The Huskies' offense, which scored on their first two possessions, couldn't find a rhythm for the remainder of the contest. Running backs Kenji Christian, Trey Cornists, and Cyncir Bowers combined for just 66 rushing yards.

Defensively, UConn showed promise, with linebacker K'Von Sherman leading the charge with four tackles, two for a loss, and a sack. However, despite their efforts, Miami (Ohio) managed to rack up 414 total yards of offense, reaching the first-down marker 20 times. The RedHawks also put up 325 passing yards and were 5-for-13 on third down.

Special teams contributed a B- grade, as freshman Jack O’Connor missed a crucial 46-yard field goal to end the first half. Punter Tommy Warner, on the other hand, was a bright spot, pinning the RedHawks in their territory multiple times and contributing 149 yards on four punts.

Coach Jason Candle called a solid game, with UConn driving the ball well and presenting several opportunities to build upon their early lead. However, penalties continued to plague the Huskies, as they amassed six infractions resulting in 60 penalty yards. This marks UConn's 33rd penalty this season. Game MVP honors went to K'Von Sherman, who made numerous big plays, including a fourth-and-one stop in the first quarter for a turnover on downs and a crucial sack in the third quarter to push Miami out of field goal range.
