'GDN': A biopic that illuminates the legacy of an unsung Indian inventor

Gopalaswamy Doraiswamy Naidu, a pioneer in Indian innovation, is the subject of the biopic GDN. This film depicts the life of an inventor who invented the first indigenous electric motor in India, established the first polytechnic college, and transformed agriculture through his creations. Young and curious Gopalaswamy (Teejay Arunasalam) is captivated by motorbikes and motor inventions, with the aim of constantly improving people's lives.

His ambitious and curious nature rapidly propels him to higher positions in the agricultural industry.

As Gopalaswamy ages (portrayed by R Madhavan), he becomes an esteemed member of colonial business circles, being the only Indian in attendance at events. Despite facing numerous obstacles, Gopalaswamy's relentless pursuit leads to his appointment as an income tax officer by the British leadership, tasked with investigating his empire.

With unwavering support from his aide Ramaiah Pillai (Sathyaraj) and steadfast wife Ranganayaki (Dushara Vijayan), Gopalaswamy confronts every challenge head-on, turning each confrontation into a test of resilience.

Talented actors including R Madhavan, Jayaram, and Sathyaraj deliver commendable performances, portraying Gopalaswamy's journey with depth and authenticity. However, the film lacks emotional resonance and could have done more to showcase Dushara Vijayan's character's importance. Despite this, GDN succeeds in capturing the key milestones of Gopalaswamy's life and highlighting his true legacy, dispelling the notion that he was merely a terrorist or tax evader. The film is currently available to stream on Netflix.
