Ex-Southampton and Italy striker Dani Osvaldo in intensive care

Former Argentine and Italian striker Dani Osvaldo has been admitted to intensive care after undergoing emergency surgery in Buenos Aires, according to reports on Saturday morning. The 40-year-old, who spent time at Southampton, Roma, Juventus and the Italian national team, was admitted following the procedure at a public hospital in Llavallol, Buenos Aires, reported Argentine outlet TyC Sports.

Osvaldo suffered from a pleural effusion, a condition that required the surgeon to remove a portion of his lung tissue. His sister and friend had reportedly noticed his condition deteriorating over the past week and alerted medical professionals.

Born in Argentina but representing Italy at both youth and senior levels, Osvaldo had retired from professional football after his time with Boca Juniors in 2016. However, he made a brief comeback to the sport in 2020, playing for Banfield for four years. Despite his earlier retirement, Osvaldo's health remains a top priority for those close to him as he continues to receive medical attention in intensive care.
